Chapter 1

I inserted this OP on another board  and it has been well received and just thought I would try it here. The 1st chapter was written on February 9th, and this chapter will be followed by chapter #2 by tomorrow night. I did write some kind of an introduction to the 1st chapter and it is following... I can assure you that this will be quite different, since you will all be with me during the year of 1945...

We will probably have about 10 chapters at different times of the year to cover just a few months. We're going to go back a few years that most of you weren’t around at this time and you will witness some good and bad things with some very interesting things that this country has gone through and I was included most of the times...

We're going back 65 years to 1945 and we will be seeing and talking about a lot of things that happened during this very interesting year. Most of you will never experience anything like this, even if you tried. Some of it, you would never want to. I guess that is why they call something like this a “once in a lifetime journey”

To kind of set the stage prior to starting this cruise, we boarded these ships at Maui (Wiki) where we are stationed at and sailed to Pearl Harbor a couple of days after Christmas of 1944, where we stayed until we got ready to sail towards our destination.

We did have a chance to go on liberty in Honolulu (image 1) (image 2) several times and we all had some good times there and of course we met a few ladies and had some real good food along with the dancing ladies. We just loaded up on food or drinks or both and constantly enjoyed ourselves… I even got to visit with one of my school chums who was one of my best friends and he was a Sea Bee and we went out together more then once…

We will now go on with the story, since we will be leaving this land of luxury and Ladies along with the good food as well as drinking Rum and Coca Cola

Now you are ready to join me on this tour of the Pacific Ocean? I see that you're already packed to join me on this venture… We will now smuggle you all aboard this APA Ship now out in the Pacific Ocean heading for Saipan… This ship can take care of 1,500 Marines with a crew with a little over 550 Navy folks… Its top speed is a little less then 20 knots… The bunks are stacked 5 high and the showers are all salt water, which means that your hair will be a little sticky and hardened.

We're only now 10 days away from invading Iwo Jima and we have well over a 100 ships in our convoy and the Air force has been bombing this Island of Iwo Jima for several weeks prior to our invasion… We all now know where we're going since they briefed us a few day ago. We have in our Convoy 3 Division of US Marines...

All of the Ships are weaving back and forth in order to avoid a hit from a Japanese Sub… We're getting into the Japanese Subs area along with potential Mines and we do have the mine sweepers with us leading the way… In the daylight it is just a beautiful sight to see all of those ships even beyond the Horizon… We have several Battleships, Aircraft Carriers, Destroyers, Destroyer Escorts, Cruisers, and LST’s… Not sure where the Hospital ships are at this time… This does not count all of the APA’s

It is now getting past dark and all the lights are out, which is a normal routine except below deck and it is a beautiful Moonlit night and you may want to join me in sleeping on the deck.. Generally some of us want to sleep on the Cover of the Cargo hold and we do this almost every night even when the Ocean starts to toss us around then it is below deck time… Most of the Marines have gotten over being Sea Sick now.

I do hope that you enjoyed the dinner we had that always includes Mash Potatoes with a couple of different veggies, with some kind of meat, then we generally have some ice cream to finish the dinner off.

In about 5 days we well be in Saipan and continue with this story at this time. Many thanks for reading this and hope you enjoy the rest of the Journey of ours so far... Chapter #2 will follow by nighfall of Valentines Day, that will be here shortly...
