Chapter 7

I do need to call attention to something that I have not mentioned in any of my chapters, but you may have heard about Kilroy being here… We use to see that about everywhere we went an there is a story about how it got started and here it is… Click on the Link to see one of the stories…

Were now finished fighting the three areas that I mentioned before, and they took a very long time, since we would keep seeing more of the enemy coming out of there caves they were in… It was a very ugly battle and we lost a few more of our new folks and our regulars that started with us and now down to 3 of the originals along with several replacements…

We did lose our replacement Lt. at the Amphitheater after he was with us for about a week… He was leading us down on the left side of it when it was getting a little dark and I was behind him on the right and he was shot through the right shoulder, and I could not figure how it missed me since it passed through him and it must have just gone above my left shoulder… He fell immediately but we was in an area that the enemy had all of their weapons trained on us… One of the replacements and I picked him up and moved him behind some cover and called the Corpsman, and he came to us and we had a few of our folks using a stretcher to move him back to the Beach… I really though that he would be OK, since it was a shoulder wound…

The next morning, I received a call and it was the Corpsman who looked after the Lt. and he told me that he was sorry, but we lost him, and I really thought a lot of him, and can remember the small laughs we had while together…

We had no one to lead us, except for the replacement Corporals, and we just kind of got ourselves attached to the adjacent Platoon… After a couple of more days, we started to wrap up the Battle, since the enemy was just on the move a lot during the day before we left the Island, we were shooting them as they were just running around…

The very next day on the 26th of March, we went aboard a Higgins Boat to get on board a ship… When we reached the ship, believe it or not but we had to climb back up the Cargo Nets to get on the Ship to take us back to Maui…

The Captain of this Ship made all of our days when he said that you Marines did one Hell of a job taking that Island, and you will not be doing any kind of duties at all and you can eat anytime you want, and have all of the Steaks or ice Cream that you want… I couldn’t believe I was hearing this…

We all had to get new Uniforms, then take a shower and shave, then went to the Galley to eat a ton of good food and it was about 7 PM that evening, and boy did we eat and got lots of Ice Cream and Coffee or anything else… Most of us then went to our Bunks to bed down for awhile… I can remember sleeping for 16 hours and we went down to eat Steaks again at about 3 PM… Then some of us went back to bed again and got up at 3 AM and ate Steaks again along with Ice Cream…

Will get ahead of ourselves now and bring you late developments… it is now March 31 and we are about caught up with our sleep and the weather is a little of the rough side, but it felt good to get up on the forecastle and just get a little wet from the spray going over the Bow of the ship…

It is now really interesting to note that the next day which is April fool’s day, and also Easter of 1945, and they treated us to special meal at Dinner if possible… LOL We also just crossed the International Date line and we had the 2nd Easter dinner, boy what a treat we had… You can’t do that again until 2029... How interesting right? You would have to do some excellent planning for that to happen, especially considering that it is April 1st and also April fools day… On this coming Easter on April 4th, I will have 84 Easters even thou I am 83 years old…

This has been a most interesting trip, with more surprises coming up…
