Chapter 6

We are now at D+9 and still working around Hill 382, Turkey Knob and the Amphitheater… This is very slow going at this point, and if you gain 70 Yards, That is considered good…

Were next to E company and G company, and after digging in again for the stand off, and were suppose to try and take Hill 382... On this day, I went back to the CP which is now almost 500 yard behind our lines to get supplies and bring up replacements… It is dark and I have to keep out an eye for the enemy, since they come out from the Caves to try to steal things from us… This particular evening, while on my way back I ran into 5 of the enemy and they did not see me I think, but I made no move to fire at them and just couldn’t move until they went far enough away to start to head for our CP… I am not about to take them on, since it is very important to get back to the CP to pick up our replacements and supplies…

A couple of our replacements were cooks and Engineers and this is about all we have to receive… A whole lot of things starts to happen and will attempt to clear it up for you… This same night, I hooked up our telephone to a Buddy from Oklahoma who was a Flame Thrower person, and he carried a Tommy Gun that he got from a Corporal, after he was killed… I ran a wire from his Fox Hole to mine so that we could talk… I also had the Walkie Talkie, that I always have with me… Later in the evening with some moonlight, I could see about 5 of the enemy who was walking towards my Buddies location and I called him on the phone and told him to watch out for the 5 of the enemy heading his way… I told him that I would have the Mortar company to send up a flare then we could open up on them… Just about the time the flare lit up the skies, he let loose with the Tommy Gun and killed 4 out of the 5 and I never got a shot off…

He has always called me his Hero and I saved his life… He was from Oklahoma and he knew everyone from at least 6 counties and he had a nice ranch, and we use to do a lot of Horse Back riding when I went there which was usually twice a year for a couple of weeks, and he introduced me to everyone around there and they would all look forward to my visits, but he never fails to tell this story about the 5 Japanese… I use to go the Rodeo with him since he worked the Rodeo, and I would have his grand kids for all 3 days of the Rodeo… I am so proud of them kids… Their Grand Father passed away 5 years ago and I lost another buddy that fired off the flare for me… He passed away within 6 months of each other… We use to play a lot of golf in Texas, where he lived… I really miss the hell out of both of them… I am losing them very fast over the last 10 years, but have always thought how lucky we are for living past the age of 18… These have all been bonus Years…

The Cook that I was telling you about, was about 3 Fox Hole down from me, and his Fox hole was so deep that you almost needed a ladder to get out of it… Here I was always going somewhere and running back to the CP and the second day, he took of his helmet to scratch his head and a bullet hit him on the fingers holding the helmet, and he may have lost both of his fingers, but I don’t really know, since I never seen him again… The Corpsman took him back to the beach… We now have been relieved for a day for R & R, and the rest felt good, but on D+10, had to go back to fighting around Hill 382 again… During this time fighting in this area, they brought up the Rocket trucks and they fired off a mess of them at hill 382 and turned around to get the heck out of there…

We finally received our New Lt. and this is first time in a battle… After his arrival, we were fighting in the Hill 382 area, while kind of spreading out a little more towards the amphitheater… the 1st evening we stopped in one location for the evening, and he needed to use the Walkie Talike and while he was talking to them the enemy cut loose on us after they seen the antenna in the air, and we took cover the best we could, and he said hey Chic, this is just like Brooklyn… I said while Sir, the next time keep the antenna as low as you can so they don’t see us… The antenna is a dead give away as to having an Officer nearby… He said when does this let up and I said our Mortars will be firing away very shortly, and just maybe they will slow down…

We are really into a several day fight in this area and a 50 yard gains was great, but very costly… Turkey Knob will be a difficult nut to crack, along with Hill 382 and the Amphitheater… This is getting very sad since I bring these replacements up to the frontline only to lose some of them before I got to know them, and not only that but we needed them… Some we have lost on the same day…

I am a little bit behind the times and I am on the D+ 14th day and do need to give you all some information while were in Battle… We are all wearing the same clothes that we came in with 2 weeks ago, including Skivvies (Underwear) and socks of course and have not had a shower or shave, but fortunate for me at my age, I could do without a shave… Remember that we all dropped our packs on the beach, thinking that we will be done in three to four days… Of course going to do your daily bowl movements and water, we had to be very clever, since you could easily be shot while doing that especially with your pants down and you had to keep very low to the ground… Just think about this and were still in battle, and not sure when we will be finished…

I can’t remember the reason, but I had to go back to the CP and I had to go up a small rugged gully and I was thinking of the best way to do it since the enemy had that gully pretty well covered… I do remember that my buddy from Pa. said that if any of the enemy kills Chic, I will then killed all of these Japanese… I took off as fast as I could and about 250 yards away was a shell hole and I jumped into it and it was occupied by our Captain along with his runner and some more Headquarters type of people… The Captain asked me where I was going and I told him and he told me that they were pinned down and he was on his way up to our Lines to see what the hold up was… I told him, then I started to leave the hole to get back to the CP to pick up replacements… He then said that I couldn’t go back there and I said Sir, those were my orders and I am just following through on them… He said if you think you can make it then go ahead, and I took right off…

I will try to catch up with you all by Thursday of this week…
