Chapter 2

How do you like sailing on the Pacific so far? Did you enjoy the Salt Water showers? We are getting ready to settle down in the Saipan & Tinian Area, the 13th of February and will be staying here over Valentines day… I am sure that we will have a great meal to celebrate that day tomorrow.

We are in the process of doing exercise here and don’t exactly know what it consists of in total… We now know where we are headed to the Invasion area and will give you all the dope after we eat Dinner this evening… Just relax and enjoy the ride… The seas has been a little rough and may not get many practice in, while in port here.

Certain things that you do need to know, while sailing towards Iwo Jima… The enemy is not too fond of us and they may start shooting at us long before our arrival… did any of you hear Tokyo Rose on the radio and the Captain put it on the Ships speakers… ( For those that are not aware of her, she is always playing real nice American Music while telling us of the problems that we are facing along with having certain things in mind for us…)  Did you hear her just announcing what they have in mind for us?  She has informed us that we will be able to hold roll call in a Telephone Booth, since there won’t be many of us left… We get many laughs from her since she does come on once in awhile, since we never believe her… She does her best in trying to get you down and concerned.

Tokyo Rose was born here of Japanese immigrant parents and graduated from UCLA just before the war broke out and she went to Japan and was trapped in Japan when WWII broke out…  She became a radio announcer and she was involved in sending out these kind of broadcasts… She was tried in this country and found guilty, and was put in jail, but later, President Ford pardoned her in 1977... She lived and died in  Chicago at the age of 90.

I do bet that we are going to have a great dinner prior to leaving for Iwo Jima and I do want to inform you that you will be issued helmets due to the large amount of flak that is floating down from the Ack Ack fire in an attempt to shoot down the Japanese fighter planes, while heading to our destination… I would suggest that you go below deck when it breaks out either en route or during the battle of Iwo Jima… Now that we had a great dinner and we're settled down, I can give you all the basic information as to how we plan on attacking and invading Iwo Jima.

D day which is on February 19th, 1945, scheduled with the 1st wave to go in followed by the other waves with the 4th and 5th Division with the 3rd Division in reserve but we will be in the area the day before, since it takes a while to get everything organized and set for the start… Will be talking more about this at the start of the invasion…

Here is the overall map of Iwo Jima including the planned invasion, along with items of interest…

Many thanks FeatheredFish:  You save the day and you will get a credit

Looking at the map above of Iwo Jima, you will see the 25th which is our Regiment of the 4th Marine Division… This area is called Blue Beach 1 & 2... The East Coast Basin had 2 Japanese Destroyers that are really beached and inoperable and it looks like our bombing did do a lot of damage… We are just scheduled to just go as far as the Airfield which was named Motoyama #1 ( will be talking about it later)…

We go up along the Eastern shore and as far West as Motoyama #2, with the 5th Marine division on our left, so we kind of split the Island in half length wise… I won’t be giving you all of the details and unjust generally talking about it now… You do note Mt. Suribachi on the bottom left where the Flag raising took place…

Now that we gave you a brief description of the Island, we will go on, but don’t fret, since we will cover it in more detail later…This can be used as Reference Material…

Now that we are leaving very early in the Morning from Saipan and continue our trip to Iwo, which is about 730 miles from here and will take us close to 3 days and we should be there while the Island is being bomb very well by Planes and ships of all kinds prior to the landing…

I have been asked this question a few times from my friends and posters, and we do need to try to discuss this… The first thing that I thought about was the worries that my Mom and Dad was going through, not hearing from me in weeks and this will be the case here… I was so close to my Mom and she is strong, but wasn’t sure how strong she could stay that way… The second thing I thought was that this would be a piece of cake, since the higher ups thought that we would take the island in 3 to 4 days and then we would get aboard Ships to join up with another convoy to invade Okinawa and this force would include the 10th Army…

I was also concerned about how I was going to do when I seen the first wounded person or one that was killed, since I used to pass out on more then 1 occasion getting a shot… In a Movie when I was about 11 with my Mom, it was a Cowboy Movie and the good guy got shot and they were removing the bullet, I then passed out and the next thing I knew, I was getting fresh air outside with my Mom…I was not worried that I wasn’t going to make it or seriously wounded, since the Officers had assured us that this is kind of a brief stop  before going to Okinawa…

Remember while aboard this ship, when going topside, the Smoking Lamp is out… It is only lit when going below… Did you notice the fancy Rest rooms we have, you will hear the Marines say that they are going to the Head, which is the Latrine or the Head…

Enjoy this trip for the next 3 days and you sure will her a whole lot of munitions going off from the Planes and the ships… See you then, I have to go for another Briefing…
